Climate protection starts at village level. A village is saving its forest
During a recent visit to Ban Houaypheng, Luang Prabang Province, Mr. Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel, Chair of the GIZ Management Board, and Mr. Mattias Giegerich, Director General of GIZ´s Department Asia, Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean, met with representatives from local authorities and communities practicing sustainable forest management.
The visit provided space for direct exchange with village representatives and project partners highlighting how GIZ supports Village Forest Management, and promotes Sustainable and Deforestation-Free Agricultural Practices, Discussions focused on how community-led approaches contribute to forest protection, climate change resilience, and sustainable rural development. The exchange pointed out the importance of local ownership and coordination with government institutions to ensure long-term impact. Co-financed by Germany and the Green Climate Fund, Climate Protection through Avoided Deforestation (CliPAD) is a EUR 62 million project contributing to Lao PDR’s Emission Reduction Programme and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). By the end of the project, these combined efforts aim to reduce 11.7 tons of CO2 equivalent while strengthening sustainable livelihoods at village level.
